Actually, I often wondered why Mulder, being from Massachusetts, had a preference for New York sports teams (well, I knew it was because David Duchovny wanted him to, but that still didn't explain why in the context of the show). Nonetheless, I have come up with an explanation: Mulder being Mulder, he just had to be different and root for New York sports teams.

Now... what is it that I like about the X-Files? It's hard to put into words, actually. I don't think I can.

Well, one thing I like is that Mulder and Scully seem so serious to outsiders but they're both actually very funny people when they want to be. And I think that makes them funnier. I love, in the first season, the way Scully's always teasing Mulder and how, in later seasons, she still does it occasionally. I love Mulder's dry, dark sense of humor, and I love his dorky sense of humor, too. I guess, in short, what I'm saying is: I like all the little funny moments on what appears to be a very serious show.

You know, I kinda love it too? It's also remarkably internally consistent. And very character-making.

I sporfled at the moment when he invites Mulder to watch NASCAR with him. Oh, Doggett, you have misjudged your predecessor.

I feel like I've read fic where it's subtlely implied his father was a Sox fan, and that the Yankee fanning might derive from that. Which is very psychologically plausible.

But yeah, it doesn't make any earth-logic sense. Which is what I love about the X-Files: it doesn't HAVE to make earth-logic sense. It just has to be awesome. And the Knicks are, ergo.

I feel like there's some moment in the second season where the writers went--oh, fuck, they're funny, got it. And then the show got license to use the fact that they had two actors with excellent comedic timing who could pull off a joke. They really recognized what finds they had in their leads, and were able to make the show a lot more complex because of it. The mix of humor and seriousness is one of my favorite things about the show, too.

What episode was that? I don't remember that moment, but I wish I did. I have to watch Season 8 again.

That would make a great fic, though, wouldn't it? Mulder and Doggett watching NASCAR...

(There is a knock at the door. DOGGETT sets down his gun and goes to open the door. It is MULDER, dressed casually.)

JEFF THE NASCAR ANNOUNCER: … he'll be a force to contend with before the end of the day. Now, Phil Davis has...

DOGGETT: (smiling) The last person I'd expect to see knocking on my door on a Saturday morning-- Agent Mulder.

MULDER: You can drop the "Agent," Agent Doggett. It's just plain old Fox Mulder now.

(DOGGETT is a little uncomfortable.)

DOGGETT: Right. You want to come in, Fox? I was just watching a race.

MULDER: That's what I was doing. Slightly different race though.

Actually, now I'm imagining Scully watching NASCAR with Doggett. Like, he's trying to be nice and keep her company while they're on the road with a case and Mulder's dead.

...OK, that's actually going into my bigbang piece.

I love this, too! There are so many great lines. And I mean- I think it would be easy to fall into a feeling of "This are serious show, we are serious agents" but the humor keeps them feeling human and hopeful in the face of murder and conspiracy and alien abductions. <3
